The next time Armstrong pushed out a patrol to where the bombing happened, to show the Taliban that they couldn’t keep Bravo Company down, they saw pieces of Allen’s uniform up in a nearby tree.

That was one of the Taliban’s dirtiest tricks, festoon some branches with a guy’s uniform scraps, like trimming a Christmas tree. The Taliban would do that, then sow the ground all around with IEDs.

It was terrible to see Allen’s uniform up in the tree. It felt like the Taliban was laughing at them. But it wasn’t worth it to go get the stuff down. There simply had to be so many IEDs around the tree. What if someone else was blown up just to remove the provocation?

No, Armstrong left the scraps up in that tree, and he helped the men of Bravo Company to see it as their own rebuke to the Taliban and that suicide bomber.
